La Crosse Sees Large Rallies Against Walker Union Bill

If Wisconsin's new Republican leaders seem determined to pass a bill of union restrictions quickly...union leaders are just as determined to stop it.
The chant 'Kill the bill' went up repeatedly at La Crosse's Riverside Park last night, during a labor rally that drew hundreds of spectators. County Board member Tara Johnson says Governor Walker's budget plan is 'malicious' and would cut pay for 300-thousand state workers.
Earlier in the day, a smaller group of picketers booed and yelled at Governor Scott Walker as he left a local steel girder plant in Muddy Flats.

A big federal grant to expand broadband internet in Wisconsin would have made connections a little swifter in the La Crosse library system. The libraries in the city and county are all connected to the internet with copper. A $23 million federal grant that has been refused by Wisconsin would have helped hook up schools, libraries and other buildings in the state with fiber optics. Apparently disagreements about who would own the fiber infrastructure derailed the grant.

The courtroom was nearly full on Monday, when a La Crosse County deputy appeared for the first time on a vehicular homicide charge.
Some, including past and present members of local law enforcement, were there in support of Deputy Trisha Stratman. Many others in court were friends and relatives of accident victim Brandon Jennings, the 16-year-old who died last summer when Stratman's squad car slammed into his car at a high rate of speed. Judge David Rice of Monroe County set no unusual conditions for the deputy's five thousand dollar signature bond. District attorney Tim Gruenke was in his office during the brief hearing, having excused himself from the case to avoid conflict of interest. |

A large crowd of Western Wisconsin citizens is expected at Riverside Park in La Crosse on tonight at 7:00 p.m. to rally against Governor Walker's attempt to undo 50 years of public sector collective bargaining. Executive Director of the Coulee Region United Educators, Gerry Raythel, will be there as well as many members of his group.

Teri Lehrke is shooting high. But the La Crosse city clerk still doubts citywide turnout in today's primary voting will be much about the seven to ten percent range. Higher, she says, in those city council districts that have primaries. Districts 7, 10, 12, 13 and 15 all have primaries today. The rest of the city of La Crosse has only the state supreme court on the ballot. In Onalaska, a three year, multi-million dollar school funding referendum is expected to push voter turnout a little higher. |
