Light Voter Turnout No Surprise Today

Teri Lehrke is shooting high. But the La Crosse city clerk still doubts citywide turnout in today's primary voting will be much about the seven to ten percent range. Higher, she says, in those city council districts that have primaries. Districts 7, 10, 12, 13 and 15 all have primaries today. The rest of the city of La Crosse has only the state supreme court on the ballot.
In Onalaska, a three year, multi-million dollar school funding referendum is expected to push voter turnout a little higher.

They're rallying in the capitol and they're rallying in La Crosse as well. Union reps are flooding the capitol in Madison this week, trying to blunt plans by governor Walker to cancel many collective bargaining rights of most public workers in the state. Tonight in La Crosse, union reps gather in Riverside Park at seven to rally against the proposed changes that would roll back decades-worth of gains made by unions in negotiations. The proposed changes from governor Walker would affect all public workers except police and fire fighters.

La Crosse police rounded up a drug dealer this week-end in his pajamas. Cops say they used a wired informant to snag Willie McCoy for dealing pot on the southside. They arrested him in his home, wearing just his pajama pants. The 48 year-old denies being a drug dealer, though it's his second arrest in the last year for dealing. And they found the buy money on McCoy and a marijuana grinder in the top drawer of his kids' dresser.

Among the many drunk drivers collared by La Crosse police this week-end, there was Troy Bjorge, working on his third drunk driving arrest. Police found him stuck in a snow bank on the southside in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The 27 year-old explained it this way to the officer: He was trying to impress his girlfriend by driving his truck onto the snowbank and then backing off. Said he'd done it before but this time, apparently, just went a little too far. And, police say, probably drinking a little too much to be driving in the first place.

New video of the Viking's Metrodome roof collapse was to be released Thursday by the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. New MSFC chair Ted Mondale compared the 60-second security camera video of the Metrodome collapse to The Blair Witch Project. Meanwhile, as folks there continue to discuss building a new roof........scheduling headaches are an every day occurence now for high school and college baseball teams that were to play in the dome this year. Take UW-L's baseball program. Head baseball Coach, Chris Schwarz. He says they rescheduled about 6 games and double headers....better then some teams that may have to resschedule as many as 15 games. |
