Public Budget Hearings Coming
MADISON, Wis. (AP) Four public hearings by the Legislature's budget committee are in the works to give people a chance to comment on Gov. Scott Walker's two-year state spending proposal. Dates and places for the hearings before the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee have not yet been set.
Why Are The Loons Dying
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) Scientists suspect invasive species may be to blame in the deaths of hundreds of loons on Lake Michigan. Last fall nearly 900 loons and probably more died while migrating south across Lake Michigan. Loons will begin their migration back north from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts in less than a month.
Addis Still Hopes To Reopen Hollywood Theater This Summer
Piece by piece, La Crosse's old Hollywood Theater is being restored for use as a showplace.
Voting is underway on the 'hollywoodtheaterlax.com' website on designs for a new theater sign to hang above 5th Avenue. The theater still doesn't have any seats at this time, but owner Phil Addis says new ones are on the way to town. Addis says the leaking roof of the Hollywood has been fixed, and many more interior repairs are needed before live performances or movies can be scheduled at the nearly 80-year-old theater.
Mega Farm Gets Negative Reaction
SARATOGA, Wis. (AP) The quality and quantity of water is a primary concern of those opposed to a 7,000-acre dairy farm in the Wood County community of Saratoga. About 350 people filled the Saratoga Town Hall Sunday to get an update on water testing. County extension agent Peter Manley told the crowd the water quality in Saratoga is above most communities. Manley says none of 79 water samples tested above the recommended level of nitrogen.
