Train Whistle Committee Gets Rolling

That committee is now getting started with its study of noise laws and community needs. Committee member Marc Schultz says many of the old-timers in Brice Prairie have no complaints about trains passing through at night. But newer residents seem to be bothered more easily. Schultz says there's no timetable for proposing solutions to the train-whistle problem. Some parts of La Crosse have been declared 'quiet zones' to keep the trains from blowing those whistles at certain times.

Colleges often ask alumni to remember their old school in their wills...and one graduate of U-W-La Crosse has done that, generously.
A donation of almost one-point-seven million dollars is being called the largest gift ever made from an estate to U-W-L. The money comes from the estate of 1935 La Crosse graduate Lillian Clark George and her husband, Theodore George. Theodore passed away last year, and Lillian died in 2003. The gift from the Georges will permit U-W-L to give out about 65-thousand dollars in new scholarships every year. 4 programs have been suspended for a year and another has been done away with at Western Technical College. It's all part of a cost savings measure and looking at where WTC can save money.
WTC President, Lee Rasch, says the suspended programs include dental hygienist....instructional assistant....interior design and mechanical design technology. The WTC Board also voted yesterday to close the child center by the fall.......with the hopes a non for profit organization would manage the facility to avoid closure. |

(AP) A Buffalo County couple has been sentenced for embezzling from their disabled son who was wounded while serving in Iraq. Prosecutors say the couple embezzled as much as $167 thousand from their son's bank accounts, which were under guardianship of a Minneapolis company. |
