What caused 20-year-old Shelby Perkins to die last May?
The pathologist who performed an autopsy on Perkins said in court today there was no other clear cause of death besides heroin use. Dr. Susan Roe testified this morning at the La Crosse County trial of Shelby's boyfriend, Mitchell Perner, who's charged with reckless homicide. Perner is accused of buying the heroin which led to Shelby's overdose. The trial began this morning, and should last through Friday.

In her first two attempts to unseat Mike Huebsch for the 94th state assembly district seat, Democrat Cheryl Hancock took a stance to reform the state education funding formula, to reduce the reliance on property taxes and eliminate the revenue caps she says limit local control.
You can expect those platforms again as she will take a 3rd crack at the empty assembly seat. Hancock, a 14-year member of the Holmen School Board and Executive Director of the local red cross, joins fellow democrat Steve Doyle and a hand full of republicans including Lynetta Kopp, Jake Speed, Ray Ebert and Jon Hetland. Last fall, the Town of Onalaska Board named a committee to deal with loud train whistles...
That committee is now getting started with its study of noise laws and community needs. Committee member Marc Schultz says many of the old-timers in Brice Prairie have no complaints about trains passing through at night. But newer residents seem to be bothered more easily. Schultz says there's no timetable for proposing solutions to the train-whistle problem. Some parts of La Crosse have been declared 'quiet zones' to keep the trains from blowing those whistles at certain times.

The La Crosse sheriff's deputy involved in a fatal crash last summer is being charged with homicide...
The state Justice Department announced this afternoon that Deputy Trisha Stratman is accused of one count of homicide by negligent use of a vehicle. Six months ago yesterday, Stratman's squad car collided with a second car, driven by teenager Brandon Jennings of Holmen. Jennings died after pulling onto Highway 35, and into the path of the squad car. Stratman was headed to Holmen to help break up a bar fight. The deputy will make her first court appearance on charge in Judge Dale Pasell's courtroom on February 4th.

Colleges often ask alumni to remember their old school in their wills...and one graduate of U-W-La Crosse has done that, generously.
A donation of almost one-point-seven million dollars is being called the largest gift ever made from an estate to U-W-L. The money comes from the estate of 1935 La Crosse graduate Lillian Clark George and her husband, Theodore George. Theodore passed away last year, and Lillian died in 2003. The gift from the Georges will permit U-W-L to give out about 65-thousand dollars in new scholarships every year. Part of the George estate also went to Theodore's old college, the Catholic University of America. |
