Onalaska Soldier To Be Honored
(AP) Four former soldiers in the Wisconsin Army National Guard will be inducted into the Guard's Hall of Honor. The four are highly decorated soldiers who enlisted in or were drafted into the U.S. Army between 1965 and 1971. Their tours of duty included stints in Vietnam and Kuwait. The soldiers are retired Brig. Gen. Kerry Denson of Lake Mills; retired Brig. Gen. James Krueck of McFarland; retired Col. Timothy Pfrang of Sussex; and retired Col. David Schumacher of Onalaska. Their induction is ``for exceptional achievement and devotion to duty.'' They'll be honored May 5 in a public ceremony in Madison. The four will join 46 others previously inducted into the Hall of Honor. The soldiers were selected by a committee of current and past Guard soldiers.
(AP) Recall elections have been ordered against four Republican Wisconsin state senators. The Government Accountability Board on Friday approved setting the recall elections for May 8 unless a primary is necessary. If so, that would be May 8 and the general election would be June 5. One of the targeted senators, Pam Galloway of Wausau, resigned earlier this month.
However, the recall election will proceed to fill her now vacant seat. The other three targeted incumbents are Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau, Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls and Van Wanggaard of Racine. The Senate is currently evenly split 16-16 between Republicans and Democrats. The recalls will determine which party has control, but the Legislature is adjourned for the year.
(AP) A recall election has been officially ordered against embattled first-term Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker after more than 900,000 signatures were collected on petitions to force a vote. The Government Accountability Board voted 5-0 Friday to order the recall against the Republican, a move that's been expected for weeks given the high number of signatures gathered between November and January. It took 540,208 signatures to trigger a recall. If a Democratic primary is necessary, it will be May 8. The actual recall vote then will be June 5. Walker was targeted for recall after he pushed through a law last year that effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most state workers. There have been only two successful recalls of governors in U.S. history.
Recalls; Lt. Governor
(AP) Wisconsin elections officials have ordered a recall vote for Republican Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. The Government Accountability Board ordered the vote Friday after nearly 809,000 signatures were submitted on recall petitions. The vote will be May 8 unless a primary is necessary. That would push the general election to June 5. Multiple Democrats have said they are running for the spots, which make primaries likely. Both Walker and Kleefisch were targeted for recall following passage last year of a law they backed that effectively ended collective bargaining rights for public workers.
City Clerk Takes 5th District Council Nominations
Do you want to get in on city government, on the ground floor?
The La Crosse City Council has an opening. But you have to live in the 5th district, the university area, to be eligible. Eric Schmidt just resigned from that council seat this month. City clerk Teri Lehrke is accepting letters of application at her City Hall office until 5 p-m on April 23rd. The council will choose a successor to Schmidt at its May meetings, and the new member will serve until next April.
