Lax Sheriff Satisfied With Koula Guilty Verdict
Throughout the Eric Koula murder trial in La Crosse, the defense argued that unknown professional killers might have shot Eric's parents two years ago.
Defense witnesses talked about suspicious people watching the neighborhood where Dennis and Merna Koula lived. Now that Eric Koula has been convicted of murdering his parents, La Crosse County Sheriff Steve Helgeson believes that the neighborhood may be a little more at ease. The sheriff realizes that those neighbors were quite worried in the weeks following the double murder.
Eric Koula was arrested eight weeks after the shootings, and was convicted in court this week. Helgeson describes the investigation leading to the arrest as 'remarkably quick.'

Crossing Guard Elimination Again Possible
Possibly on the chopping block again for La Crosse: School crossing guards. Police could dump the service in an effort to deal with budget cuts of around two hundred thousand dollars inthe coming year. City councilman Bob Seaquist hopes it never comes to that
The police proposed getting rid of crossing guards last year but kept them after resistance from the city council.
Lax Still Aiming To Put Pay Stations In Ramps This Year
You could start paying for some parking spaces in La Crosse's downtown ramps before the end of the year.
The city's Parking Utility Board is still studying gate systems, that would require drivers to pay 50 cents an hour to park in reserved sections of the ramps. Bob Haines with the city Public Works department is looking at how other cities the size of La Crosse charge for parking in ramps:
Haines says his department is now working on connecting all the ramps to City Hall through fiber optic cable...to provide security video, and to remotely operate those traffic gates.
