WAFER Restock on Today
The WAFER food pantry in La Crosse has plenty of people to serve. And then it picked up 80 more families in May. Caused a bit of a shortage on the shelves at WAFER. With eyes on a restock, WAFER will have truck at Riverside center in downtown La Crosse on Front street until three this afternoon. Their goals: ten thousand pounds of food. A solid thousand dollars in cash.
Viterbo Grad Found Dead In Pool
A Greenfield man, who graduated in May from Viterbo University in La Crosse, is dead after drowning in the family swimming pool.
The Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office says that 22-year-old Jeffrey Wielichowiski was having a party with his friends last week when he jumped in the pool. He had energy drinks and vodka and his friends urged him not to swim, because he was stumbling and his speech was slurred.
The medical examiner said two friends pulled him from the bottom of the pool. Paramedics tried but failed to save him.
Might Be More Company For Ona Menard's
Folks in Onalaska have seen over the years that once an area starts to get developed, it doesn't take long for several businesses to move in.
It happened that way at Crossing Meadows, the Pralle Center, and Theater Road. Now, the city's Community Development Authority has turned its attention toward the Menard's area on Sand Lake Road.
City planner Jason Gilman says a master plan for that area was developed six years ago. But it needs roads and other improvements before new businesses can pop up.
LAX Hires New Ass't Super
The Board of Education for the School District of La Crosse approved the hiring of Dr. Troy Harcey as the Associate Superintendent of Instruction at its meeting Monday night. Harcey will assume the position immediately, replacing Randy Nelson who was promoted to Superintendent of Schools on July 1st.
Harcey has been with the School District of La Crosse since 2000, serving as a teacher, associate principal and principal at Logan Middle School. In addition, Harcey has been the district’s supervisor of health and physical education since 2009.
The district will look to fill Harcey’s current position in the coming weeks.
Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Decision This Week, Cleveland on the List
La Crosse's fire chief could find out this week if he's got a new gig. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa city manager's office says the replacement for that city's outgoing fire chief will likely be named in the next few days. La Crosse chief Gregg Cleveland is among five finalists for the job. He's been the chief in La Crosse for five years. The Cedar Rapids fire department provides service for over 120 thousand people with only about fifty percent more firefighters than the La Crosse department has.
