The Investigation Into A Death List Continues
The investigation into a Sparta student's arrest last week for compiling a Death list with 26 students names on it, is far from over. That from school Superintendent, John Hendricks. In the meantime, he says since these situations are scarce in the district, there were some things the district will take from it.
Hendricks says the district is working with Sparta Police and the state to understand why a 16 year old sophomore compiled the list of male and female students that he wanted to kill. The male student is now undergoing a psychological examine out of the area.
Will The GAB Hold Recall Elections In May
If the Government Accountability Board schedules recall elections against the Governor, Lt. Governor and Republican Senators on May 29th, as reported last week, would anyone be around to vote? It is the day after Memorial Day. We posed that question to UW-L Political Scitentist, Joe Heim.
Heim says he was surprised the GAB would schedule recall elections that early. He says he feels the elections would come about in July....and possibly August when the senate primaries are held. The 2012 United States Senate election in Wisconsin will take place on November 6 alongside a U.S. presidential election as well as other elections to the United States Senate and House of Representatives and various state and local elections.
Winona Vs. The Ash Borer
It's not just the Lorax who speaks for the trees...
The city of Winona is working on plans to prevent the emerald ash borer from ruining the local tree population. Public works director Keith Nelson expects some ash trees to be removed over time, but he doesn't want them all to disappear. On Monday night, the Winona City Council will discuss plans for preserving ash trees, and for controlling the ash borer once it actually arrives in the city.
Firefighter Dies Battling Blaze
(AP) A firefighter has died and three others were injured battling a blaze that raged for hours, gutting the historic Abby Theatre in Abbotsford. The Marshfield News Herald reports the Clark County Coroner confirmed the death Sunday night. The identities and conditions of the firefighters were not immediately released. It reports that three of them were transported by ground; one by helicopter. Abbotsford Fire Chief Jody Apfelbeck says the building's owner checked its furnaces at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and found no problems. The fire was reported at about noon. Apfelbeck said the building sustained ``substantial damage'' including the collapse of its roof. About 35 firefighters from four departments responded. The News Herald says archives indicate the theater opened in 1949.
Feehan Senate Run Expected
Are you ready for the November elections yet?
We've heard plenty about the presidential race, but the La Crosse area also has legislative races this fall. Later today, La Crosse County Republican Party chair Bill Feehan will make an announcement about the 32nd District Senate election. Feehan announced in January that he was forming a committee to explore a Senate race against incumbent Democrat Jennifer Shilling. No official announcements have been made yet in the other legislative races for La Crosse County.
