Winona Vs. The Ash Borer
It's not just the Lorax who speaks for the trees...
The city of Winona is working on plans to prevent the emerald ash borer from ruining the local tree population. Public works director Keith Nelson expects some ash trees to be removed over time, but he doesn't want them all to disappear. On Monday night, the Winona City Council will discuss plans for preserving ash trees, and for controlling the ash borer once it actually arrives in the city.
Feehan Senate Run Expected
Are you ready for the November elections yet?
We've heard plenty about the presidential race, but the La Crosse area also has legislative races this fall. Later today, La Crosse County Republican Party chair Bill Feehan will make an announcement about the 32nd District Senate election. Feehan announced in January that he was forming a committee to explore a Senate race against incumbent Democrat Jennifer Shilling. No official announcements have been made yet in the other legislative races for La Crosse County.
Area Basketball Teams Moving On
La Crosse Central Red Raiders rode a dominating 1-3-1 zone defense to a division 1 regional final on Saturday night, beating Chippewa Falls 62-48 to extend their season on the court and move one step closer to Madison in the state basketball tournament. Alex Wuensch and Sawyer Smith were an efficient tandem, scoring 20 points and 17 points respectively, both hitting more than 60 percent of their shots. Meanwhile Chi-Hi star, Tyson Kalien, knocked down 23 but Central's zone made him work for it as the senior went 6-19 from the field. Central will next play D.C. Everest at Eau Claire North on Thursday.
Onalaska boys continued their dominating run this season, eliminating River Falls from the tournament 71-42 behind 36 points from Matt Thomas. The win sets up a meeting between the top two teams in Division 2, when #1 Onalaska plays #2 Rice Lake at Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday.
G-E-T will play Prescott at Osseo-Fairchild on Thursday after getting a close win Saturday against Arcadia, 53-51.
Bangor will play the winner of Blair-Taylor and Luther after beating Mondovi 78-67.
Late Flu Season Not A Problem In La Crosse County?
The flu was a little late in getting to Wisconsin this winter...
Luckily, it sounds like people in La Crosse County were ready for it well in advance. County public health nurse Christine Berth doesn't expect too many people to ask for flu shots in March, because so many shots were given during the fall. In fact, Berth says this is the time of year when the county starts ordering flu vaccine for next season. The Centers for Disease Control says this is the latest beginning for a flu season since the early 80's.
"Golf Club" Robbers Get Reduced Charges
A week ago, he was facing a possible prison term for attempted robbery...
Now, Jadin Botcher of La Crosse is chared with trespass with a dangerous weapon, for his alleged role in a home break-in. Botcher originally was accused of threatening a La Crosse woman with a golf club...but his attorney, Russell Hammer, says the victim asked for the robbery charge to be dropped because Botcher never actually entered the home. Botcher's bail of 20-thousand dollars was reduced to a signature bond. Charges against three other men in the same case also have been reduced.
