GAB Needs Dough For Recall Elections
The Government Accountability Board says they figure they will need over $650 thousand to get upcoming recall elections set up. But the GAB's Reid Magney, says that won't be it money wise.
The GAB has not officially asked for the money but it did break down the expected costs for the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee, which would allocate the funding. The board said it would need 50 temporary workers, and office space for them to check the validity of up to one and a half million petition signatures.
Harter Vetoes City Budget
A surprise announcement in La Crosse city hall today from Mayor Matt Harter regarding the upcoming year's operating budget and the $630 thousand dollars in new fees that are a part of that spending plan.
Harter says, essentially, he's fine with fees. But he wants property taxes to decrease at the same rate fees increase. The city council will be in a bit of a rush. A budget has to be published prior to tax bills going out in December.
Council Overrides Harter's Budget Veto
The La Crosse Common Council has overturned Mayor Harter's veto of the 2012 city budget, by a 12-2 vote. Only Jim Bloedorn and Doug Farmer voted to uphold the veto. Several council members spoke during a brief session Saturday afternoon, claiming that Harter did not publicly object to imposing new fees without corresponding tax cuts during meetings about the budget. After the meeting, the mayor insisted that he has often spoken against fees that are not balanced by tax cuts. Harter says he'll now have to wait until the 2013 budget process to make the changes he would like.
New Info On Baby Found In River
Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand has released new information about the baby that was found on Labor Day...floating down the Mississippi River. A fisherman saw a white boat, possibly a Sea Rae with a cabin, anchored along a bank of the river. He saw a woman in her 30's to 40's alone in the boat...and she wasn't fishing. Brand says they are not looking to arrest the woman, but.....
He said the the baby, named Angel, deserves a proper burial and he personally would like to see closure in the case. As for how the baby died.......that's still being investigated.
When Jill Billings gets seated as the next 95th state assembly woman in the state capitol.......she will see a very familiar face sitting across from her. Steve Doyle.....who she sits with on the Lacrosse County board. Doyle says having not one but two familair faces in Madison now.......you should see an impact on this side of the state quite quickly.
