Mixed News on Wisconsin Unemployment
Wisconsin is adding jobs but many areas of the state are still showing increases in unemployment. That's the latest mixed news from the state in a jobs report. Several of the state's metro areas added hundreds of jobs in February. But all 12 of the metros had higher unemployment rates compared to January. Metro La Crosse unemployment increased from 6.2 percent to 6.4 percent, even while adding three hundred jobs. La Crosse county continues to have very low unemployment, second lowest in the state at six percent.
Birthday Present To The Loggers....A New Lease
The La Crosse Loggers turn 10 years old this year and may be getting a one year lease extension from the city as a birthday present. The Common Council will vote on that next month. And General Manager, Chris Goodell, says he likes the position the Loggers have been with the city.
The current 10 year lease was set to expire after this season and Goodell says they hope to get another long term lease when the city and the organziation meet again.
Governor Reacts To Bridge Plan
The U.S. House of Representatives, 2 weeks ago, on approved legislation on building a new St. Croix River bridge to connect Minnesota and Wisconsin. The House voted 339 to 80 in favor of legislation that exempts the proposed $700 million bridge at Stillwater, Minnesota from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Governor Scott Walker talked about the future of Minnesota/Wisconsin partnerships.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, the lead agency on the new bridge, will begin soil testing for the span's foundation this summer. Construction is expected to start in 2014 and take three years.
Hougom Funeral At St. Joseph On Friday
Services are planned tomorrow at a church on St. Joseph Ridge for the young woman shot to death in La Crosse this week.
Sara Hougom died shortly after being shot Monday at an apartment building on Division Street. Police have not made any arrests in the case yet. They're still investigating whether there was a connection between Hougom's shooting and gunshots fired a few minutes earlier at a house on Island Street in north La Crosse.
