Budget Crisis in Minnesota Dodged, Deal Reached
A budget crisis has been at least temporarily averted in Minnesota. Lawmakers in St. Paul voted on a deal this morning to erase a three billion dollar deficit. No new taxes, which is nice, says Republican state rep, Greg Davids, but no as many cuts as he'd like to see, either. He says he's continually surprised by the spending appetite that lawmakers have in the state's capital. Odd, considering the impending budget shortfalls.Davids says the state's next budget could face a defict of six billion dollars unless needed cuts to programs are made.
Downtown Group Says Parking Ramp Fees Not a Bad Idea
Parking really isn't free in La Crosse. It just seems that way. Downtown business owners pay a tax so that there's no meters on the streets and no fees in the ramps. Something that could change. And Downtown Mainstreet boss, Tim Kabat's okay with the change. He says, sometime in the future, there will have to be an investment in parking in order to appropriately maintain the downtown parking ramps.
A recently formed parking board has talked about charging for parking in downtown ramps.
Onalaska Woman Flirts with Responsibility, Goes Other Direction
An Onalaska woman certainly started out doing the responsible thing on Friday. But things kind of got out of hand after calling a friend to get a ride home after she'd been drinking. Cops say Stella Kruse was getting a ride from La Crosse in the early morning hours when she started beating on the woman driving. Then she grabbed the car's steering wheel, and the car wound up in someone's yard. And then Stella took off running. With the keys to the car. Cops say they found her trying to get into a stranger's house. Stella was drunk. Stella was incoherent. And Stella barely missed the groin of one cop with a poorly aimed kick. She was arrested on several charges.
Late Starts Could be in Future for La Crosse Schools
Maybe snow days won't have to be an all day kind of thing.
The La Crosse school district is considering allowing late starts to school days instead of calling the whole day off because of wintery weather. A new survey of parents in the district spurred looking at the change.
La Crosse superintendent Jerry Kember says if the district moves to late starts to deal with weather, that could keep the school year from dragging on into summer because of missed days during winter.
