Need for Smokes Nets La Crosse Guy Second OWI on Same Day
Police let you go from getting your first OWI, you'd probably go home and lick your wounds, right? Not Ben Hanson. He's the La Crosse guy who got arrested twice for drunk driving on Saturday. First time, he blew a .40 at the scene. Four and a half hours later cop got him at a .31. For OWI number two, Hanson told the cop he was driving because he needed some cigarettes. Well provisioned for the trip; police counted a case of beer, a twelve pack and three icy cold six packs in Hanson's car. Three cold cans were already missing.
Gun Training Classes the New Hit Thing
Firearms training is the new hot thing in Wisconsin.
The state's concealed carry law requires some form of training in order to pack a weapon. It's led to a great amount of interest in training classes at the Onalaska Gander Mountain Academy
Ben Halvorsen's an instructor at Gander Mountain where, he says, all the instructors have a military or law enforcement background. The six hour class at the academy will cover everything from how to stand to when to use a firearm. Halvorsen says price for the class is $99.
Fire Chief Not Identifying Ideal Station Location, Numbers
The ideal number of fire stations in La Crosse? Depends on what kind of outcome you're after, says fire chief Gregg Cleveland. The chief has told a city council committee looking at his department that a couple fire stations are not located in ideal spots. But he remains noncommittal about whether the city has enough stations altogether. Cleveland says only that more stations means lower response times and fewer stations means longer response times. Cleveland says, you could put a fire truck on every corner, but that isn't necessarily the most cost effective way to run a fire department.
Sen. Klobuchar Hopeful About Debt Deal
From the middle of the country, it looks like little progress is being made toward a debt reduction deal in Washington.
But from the middle of the U-S Senate, the moderate center, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar is optimistic that agreement can be reached before an early August deadline. While touring a dairy farm near Caledonia on Saturday, Democrat Klobuchar pointed out that a debt plan needs more than a simple majority to pass...it needs 60 votes.
Klobuchar believes billions could be cut just in areas such as defense spending. She says Minnesota residents want to see 'shared sacrifice' at the federal level.
