Diversity Leader OK With Minority Hiring in City Hall
Key words this week: Equality, diversity, tolerance. Thomas Harris is a guy well-versed in the use of those words as organizer of yesterday's Martin Luther King observance. We talked to Harris about the seeming lack of diversity among La Crosse city hall employees. Harris says he actually sees progress in that area. Some progress. Baby steps, he calls them. Harris says credentialed people of color need to begin to recognize the value of living and working in La Crosse. At that point, maybe they'll start applying for jobs in city hall. We found just 17 racial minorities working in city hall at the end of 2010. None of those are black.
Punctual Pet Licensing Window Closing Soon
Got a license yet for Max? Might want to get a move on. Wisconsin law requires cats and dogs to get licensed before January 30th. The Coulee Region Humane Society figures that only 18% of cats are licensed in La Crosse county while, they figure, 69% of dogs have their tags. After the 30th, some municipalities offer a grace period to get a pet license but can still fine you for getting it late. Although a license can run you $20, having an unlicensed pet can cost you $250.
Judge Says More After Bootcamp
One reason Wisconsin's prison population has dropped two years in a row, maybe the fact that some would be offenders are being given one more chance to correct themselves before heading to the big house. But does it always work?
Lacrosse County Judge Scott Horne says bootcamps can give structure and discipline.....but a breakdown occurs when the offender is released back into the same enviroment of crime they faced when they went in.
Providing more structure and release provisions, Horne says, are keys to offenders staying out of prisons.
Gas Leak After Crash Near Nutbush
A rear-end crash leads to a gas meter break near Nutbush City Limits in Onalaska.
The collision between two vehicles led to the damage to the meter outside DCA Race FAB on Lauderdale Place. That business had to be evacuated. No damage or evacuation at Nutbush across the street.
