More Burn Restrictions In Place
Emergency burning restrictions have been extended to include Jackson and Monroe counties and additional portions of Adams and Juneau counties. Campfires have been banned in four Wisconsin State Parks system properties including Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, the Lapham Peak unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest, Richard Bong State Recreation Area and Big Foot Beach State Park until further notice due to continued drought and high to very high fire danger conditions. The extended Emergency Burning Restrictions and the park campfire bans are effective Friday, July 13 at 12:01 a.m. Emergency burning restrictions currently are in effect in all of Crawford and Richland and portions of Juneau county.
170 Sick From Swimming In Lake Wazee
What started out as a couple of people calling Jackson County saying they got sick from swimming in Lake Wazee last week, has turrned into something they have never seen before. Public Health Nurse, Christine Hovell, explains.
The numbers of people sick......at least 170. She says the lake is closed until more testing can be done next week. In the meantime, if you are fishing or scuba diving in the area.......she says wash your hands before and after the activity.
Cycling The Country For Leader Dogs
Cycling for Leader Dogs is a 3,500 mile, trans-America solo bicycle tour from the west coast to the east coast to increase awareness and raise funds for Leader Dogs for the Blind. Cyclist Mark Mansell is a member of the La Center Lions Club in La Center, Washington and talked with WIZM news about the trek.
Mansell has already passed his goal of $35 thousand, or 1,000 sponsors pledging one penny for every mile of the trip. All donations of $35 or more will receive a special commemorative pin. He will be going through La Crosse later today.
Comments Sought For Statewide Obesity Plan
State public health administrator Karen McKeown says they are still taking public comment on new ways the state wants to combat childhood obesity. It’s a 124-page document outlines the best types of physical activities for young people plus ways for adults to make healthy choices for meals.
McKeown says the state’s plan will need support from both the public and private sectors in order to succeed.
Noon Is New Time For Road Closing At Genoa Nuke Plant
A temporary closure of Highway 35 at Genoa today is being postponed until noon.
The road will be closed near the Dairyland power plant, so spent nuclear fuel can be transported to a storage site down the road. The fuel has been kept at the main plant in Genoa since the nuclear reactor there was shut down in 1987, as a cost-cutting measure.
