Opening Of Riverfest

Commodore Mark Schneider Senior signaled the start of La Crosse's Riverfest for this year. Schneider and most of the other Commodores who have served since 1984 were in their white uniforms for opening ceremonies today at Riverside Park. The first day of the festival, which runs through July 4th, features music, a hypnotist, pig races, and the Puttin' on the Lips contest.
Two Car Crash Injures Three People
A head on car crash in Vernon county puts three people in the hospital. Yesterday, morning at about 9:45 Christopher Otis was heading east on hwy 14 in the Town of Franklin when he tried to pass another car. During the pass the 33 year old Boscobel man ran head on into a car driven by Roger Christensen causing the Readstown man to go off the road where his car rolled twice Christensen and his passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Otis also went to the hospital. His 3 year old passenger was found uninjured in his car seat.
Cole Headed For Monre County Murder Trial
An Illinois woman claims it was an accident...but the Monroe County D-A is charging her with murder.
Tammy Cole is one step closer to being tried for the April shooting death of Vance Evans at his house in Tomah. Cole was bound over for trial after a hearing today in Sparta. Her sister, Cindy Sturm, testified that Tammy told her about an accident, around the time Evans was killed. Evans was shot in the back of the head. He and Cole had known each other for years in northern Illinois...and police say evidence places Cole at the scene of the murder.
Road Closed Due to Gas Leak
A LaCrosse county road is temporarily closed. This morning a gas line ruptured causing crews to close the portion of county highway M that runs from West Salem to Barre Mills. Emergency dispatch advises drivers to stay away from that area until the gas line is fixed and the road is re-opened. It could take a few hours before repairs are completed.
Pot Bust On I-90, French Island
Drug dogs help a La Crosse County deputy nab a guy carrying marijuana on I-90...
Edward Lipke, with addresses in Bangor and Sparta, was stopped and searched near Interstate Exit 2 on Monday. Lipke is accused of hauling 14 ounces of pot and almost 11-thousand dollars in cash. Where was the marijuana hidden? Sheriff's Sergeant John Zimmerman says, in the trunk.
