Macy's apparently the latest to collect tax refunds from La Crosse

Written by

Another property tax refund for a big retailer appears on the way from La Crosse's city hall.

Last year, the city settled with Walgreens on a tax refund of $84,000 on properties the drug giant claimed were over assessed.

This time it's Macy's, which closed March 2017. The recently shuttered retailer sued the city over excessive assessments.

Tonight the city council finance committee considers a settlement that will refund Macy's $151,749.24 for the tax years 2014-2016.

Big box retailers like Walgreens and Macy's have had repeated success suing municipalities over assessments using the so-called dark store loophole in state tax law.

The city faces many similar challenges in the near future.
