Indian Logo Bill To State Senate

WISCONSIN STATE SENATORS WILL GET THE NEXT CRACK AT A BILL TO STOP SCHOOL DISTRICTS FROM USING INDIAN LOGOS.  THAT BILL PASSED THE ASSEMBLY BY A NINE-VOTE MARGIN YESTERDAY. IT WOULD ALLOW THE STATE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT TO IMPOSE FINES ON ANY DISTRICT WHICH REFUSES TO DROP A NICKNAME OR MASCOT RULED TO BE OFFENSIVE TO A CERTAIN RACE. SENATOR KATHLEEN VINEHOUT OF ALMA SUPPORTS THE BILL, SAYING THE STATE NEEDS TO 'BURY VESTIGES' OF RACISM IN SCHOOL NICKNAMES. THE OSSEO-FAIRCHILD AND G-E-T SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN VINEHOUT'S DISTRICT HAVE BEEN CRITICIZED FOR MAINTAINING INDIAN NICKNAMES.
