Get out your fireproof chili spoons. The 8th of October marks the 20th anniversary of the annual State Bank Financial Chili Cookoff and the Onalaska Police Department is hitting the ground running with, as they put it, dueling chili(s).
Onalaska D.A.R.E. Officer Leah Myers says their theme is “A little taste of heaven and a little bite from hell.” I’m the angelic side of the duo so I’ll be making a mild white chicken chili. Great flavor but it only has “angelic heat”. Since you can’t have heaven without hell our Administrative Manager will be making her hellishly hot Cajun chili. I helped her with it last year and it is HOT. She tops it with something called the “Devil’s Slaw” that’s so hot it was burning my fingers through the gloves.”
According to Myers the two cooks will be sporting halos or horns depending on which version of chili you try. All of the proceeds go to support the D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T. programs in our area schools and Habitat for Humanity. Commemorative pins, which admit four to the cookoff, are on sale at the Onalaska Police Department for $20.00 and individual tickets may be purchased on the day of the event for $5.00. The cook-off starts at 11:30am and winds down at 2:30pm.
