Monroe County Jail Goes To Voters

In April, Monroe County voters will be faced with a choice at the polls: remodel and add on to the downtown Sparta Justice Center location, or build a new courthouse and jail near the dog pound on the East side of the city. After 20 years, the county finally looks poised to make something happen. And some plans are already in place.

County Board Chair Rick Irwin says the hope is that giving voters options as to where the center will go will help prevent the outrage caused by the last plan. Four years ago the discussions caused so much controversy, it launched a recall of multiple county board supervisors.
