Taggers Face Stiffer Penalties With New Proposals

The last year has seen a big surge in graffiti in La Crosse.  In an apparent response to the tagging, the city council is expected next week to pass new rules that aim  to crack down on graffiti vandals as well as defining the timelines within which property owners have to clean up the graffiti.  The proposed rule changes say that the city can do the clean-up after 24 hours and bill the property owner.  Fines also will balloon: a thousand dollars for the first tagging.  Two thousand dollars for each subsequent violation.
