Tens of Thousands in Fire Fees Collected
There was plenty of grousing when a vast list of new fees went into effect for the city of La Crosse at the beginning of the year. But those fees have meant a surge in revenue for some departments. The fire department, which began collecting new fees for everything from fire pits to false alarms on January first, has padded the city's coffers with tens of thousands of dollars. The recreational fire pit permit alone has generated 23 thousand dollars. A fire inspection fee for businesses has brought in 67 thousand dollars so far this year. Those fees can range from about a hundred dollars for the smallest businesses to several hundred dollars.
