Woman Killed In Monroe County Crash

A multiple car crash in Monroe County Friday claimed the life of a 34 year old woman and two other drivers were seriously hurt. The crash, happened just after 8am Friday on Highway 173.

A car driven by 61 year old Suzanne Becker swerved to miss a car that had slowed down due to intense smoke coming from a nearby forest fire. Becker’s car then struck the backend of a car driven by 34 year old Melissa Mundo. These two drivers were standing on the highway between the two cars when a third car, driven by 57 year old David Peiper, hit the rear of Becker’s vehicle, pushing it into both women.

Mundo died from her injuries. Becker was sent by ambulance to Tomah Memorial Hospital, and then by helicopter to a hospital in Marshfield with potentially life threatening injuries. Peiper sustained minor injuries.
