Kader Has Opposition

Gage Maurer has announced his candidacy for the City Council District 11 special election. He will be running in the recall election of City Council President Audrey Kader.

Maurer's decision to run for City Council is largely due to his concern in the current direction of the City Council. First he is concerned with the possible loss of the monthly Committee of the Whole meetings. Also, when regulations are unpredictable and unreasonable, like the recent sign ordinance, it creates an unfair burden on small businesses in La Crosse. Maurer said, "UW-La Crosse has consistently had representation on City Council; therefore, Viterbo should also have representation on City Council”. Because District 11 is predominantly made up of Viterbo University students, it seems fitting that a student from the district could fill the position. For example, the UW-La Crosse campus was allowed an exemption from alternate-side parking restrictions while Viterbo was not.

Maurer is currently a sophomore business management major at Viterbo University. He is a member of the National Society of Leadership, Students in Free Enterprise, a founding member of an on campus political organization, and as a current member of the Viterbo University Men's Golf Team, he is a representative on the Student Athletes Advisory Committee. He has also been on the University Dean's List each semester and works as a university tutor.
