Regents Investigate Overpayments

As auditors continue to sort through errors that prompted $33 million in benefit overpayments for University of Wisconsin System employees, new details emerged last week about an additional $1.1 million loss because of even more overpayments. UW Regent Brent Smith of La Crosse explains what happened.

Smith says the routine state audit that last month publicly revealed the overpayments also raised questions about the extent to which other problems exist within the UW System's payroll and benefits processing. The UW System has since recovered about $20 million.
