Campbell Boat Landing Fee Sparks Land Ownership Questions
As the town of Campbell begins to collect new boat
launch fees for the
year, we've heard some confusion about who owns what on
French Island. Specifically, about two landings on the eastern edge of the
island on Fisherman's Road. It's the town of Campbell that will use fee
revenue to improve and maintain one of those landings despite the fact that it's
federal land essentially under the jurisdiction of the city of La Crosse.
The city parks department declined the Army Corps of Engineers request to
maintain the landings, saying it didn't want to use city money to maintain the
fed property. Campbell will use money from its new launch fees to maintain
that landing and three others on the island.
