Council to Weigh Park Name Change This Week
After more than a hundred years, George Poage will soon get a little recognition in La Crosse. The city council this week will likely vote to convene the city's naming commission to consider renaming a city park after Poage, America's first black olympic medalist. Until last year, Poage's history had been largely ignored in the city where he grew up. And then city park and rec director Steve Carlyon heard about his medal-winning exploits at the 1904 St Louis Olympics (during an interview with a local historian on WIZM)
Carlyon wants to rename Hood Park, Poage Park.
