Smoking Report 50th Anniversary
On Saturday, the United States will mark the 50th anniversary of the
first Surgeon General’s report on smoking and health, which found that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and was linked to other serious diseases. And at that time, representatives of tobacco maker R.J. Reynolds knew they had a fight in front of them.
Sharon Schultz is an R.N. at Mayo in La Crosse. She says the ripple effect from that report was short......but is surely seen now.
She says in the last 50 years, the U.S. has made remarkable progress, cutting smoking rates by more than half and per capita consumption of cigarettes by more than 70 percent.
