Anti-smoking laws passed around the U-S seem to be having the desired effect of getting people to give up tobacco...
The effect is more pronounced in cities than in rural areas, according to a nationwide study of smoking rates since the 1990's. La Crosse County health educator Judi Zabel says a lack of funding for tobacco education may be preventing young people in rural counties from going tobacco-free. She's looking at ways to increase health education to small town kids.
The University of Washington study shows that the number of smokers in La Crosse County dropped at least 25 per cent over a 16-year period. Close behind in their declines were Jackson, Monroe, and Vernon Counties.
Those idle ticket gates installed in La Crosse's parking ramps could begin working any day now.
And this afternoon, we could find out exactly what day the equipment will be turned on. The city parking utility board is scheduled to set a date for activitating the ticket machines, as part of its meeting today. Mayor Tim Kabat told the board last month that he hopes charging for hourly parking will help pay for proper maintenance of the ramps.
The hourly parking rate in the ramps would be 75 cents, after three hours of free parking.

The Saturday morning Farmers’ Market previously held in the La Crosse County parking lot will relocate to Riverside Park. The Riverside Park Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The market season runs from May 10th thru October 25th.
