La Crosse Named 'Walk Friendly' Community

Written by

What does La Crosse have in common with Atlanta, Georgia...Tallahassee, Florida...and the hometown of Indiana University?

All those cities have just been named to a national list of 'walk friendly' communities. La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat says the award from a pedestrian support group validates the efforts the community has made to improve sidewalks and neighborhoods.

The mayor and other city staffers celebrated the Walk Friendly designation with a gathering on East Avenue, where changes have been made to the street and sidewalk to promote walking and biking.

A hit-and-run driver's family asked for leniency...while the accident victim's relatives wanted a maximum 15-year sentence.

Damien Mracek's punishment will be in-between those extremes, at 10 years behind bars. The Holmen man was sentenced today for the crash last May that killed 75-year-old Darel Skolos of La Crosse. Judge Elliott Levine says the longer sentence was influenced by indications that Mracek tried to hide evidence from the crash.

Mracek's attorney argued that nobody knows for sure which driver crossed the center line before that collision.
