Deer and wood ticks are being seen in higher numbers than last year...increasing the risk of Lyme disease and related illnesses. Tessa Whitemarsh monitors insects for the La Crosse County health department. She recommends looking for ticks when you shower or shampoo after being outdoors...and warming up the clothes dryer, because high heat can kill ticks hiding in clothes. According to statewide studies, the tick population in La Crosse County has gone down in the last decade, but has increased in surrounding counties.
A judge in Jackson County has set murder suspect Michael Harmon's bond at half-a-million dollars.
Harmon was attending his first court hearing today, since being arrested in June for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Angela Nelson. A pre-trial conference in the case is set for August 14th. Judge Thomas Lister ordered Harmon not to have contact with Nelson's family, or with his ex-girlfriend Billie Jo Harwick. After Nelson was shot at her apartment in Black River Falls, Harwick allegedly drove Harmon to Milwaukee, where he hid out for almost two weeks.
