Garbage Collaboration Studied by Cities
The future of garbage pick up in La Crosse and Onalaska could involve garbage trucks with mechanical arms that grab cans curbside. That will be one of the issues under discussions when reps from the two cities meet today to talk about some of the ideas in a recent garbage study conducted in the county. Also under discussion will be how to make the whole garbage collection process more fair. La crosse public works director Dale Hexom says currently garbage pick-up is not equitable because everyone pays for it through property taxes but not everyone throws away the same amount of stuff. Primarily, the two cities are seeking ways to collaborate on waste to make the whole process more effective and efficient.
Safe, Cash Missing in La Crosse Bar HeistA Sunday burglary in downtown La Crosse has left a bar owner without his safe and a big pile of cash. Police say someone forced their way through the back door of the Popcorn Tavern on fourth street sometime after four on Sunday morning. Then through another door where the safe was sitting. Thousands of dollars inside. Thieves took the whole thing. They may have also taken some booze. But they did leave behind some chisels and a knife. Cops are hoping to use those and some possible surveillance video from the Grand River Station bus depot to nail the perps. Robbery Leaves Victim Without Motorcycle Cash, CologneA La Crosse guy's a little lighter in the backpack today. Police say the guy was robbed early morning Saturday near the McDonald's on Losey. The victim's story: He was going to a house of people that he didn't really know. With a small backpack stuffed with over two thousand dollars and three bottles of cologne. Guy got jumped and beat pretty good. He says he was planning to use the money to buy a motorcycle. Guy never happened to mention what the three bottles of cologne were for. But he did deny that a drug deal had anything to do with the robbery. Southside Train DeathStill some interviews to do for police in a train death on La Crosse's southside this weekend. Police say a 32 year-old woman was killed after getting hit by a train behind the Fiesta Mexicana restaurant off Mormon Coulee Road. Apparently she was sitting on the tracks at the time. Unofficially, police are saying the death looks like a suicide. Krump Running In 95thThe special election for 95th District Assemblyman picks up another candidate. Pump House executive administrator David Krump is the third Democrat to enter the primary to succeed Jennifer Shilling in the Assembly. Krump is promoting job creation in his campaign, as well as education and the environment. Jill Billings and Christine Clair entered the 95th District race earlier this week. No date has been set for the election.
