Kapanke Helps Secure Funds For Damaged Dams
Senator Dan Kapanke says that Vernon County's P.L. 566 Dams will be eligible for Stewardship funds in the coming year based on a motion passed in Thursday’s Joint Finance Committee hearing on the 2011-13 biennium budget. The primary function of the 22 dams is flood control and safety.
Since 2008, Vernon County has been under Orders by the DNR to repair five of the twenty-two large flood control structures. They experienced structural damage during the 2007 and 2008 historic flooding in the region. Three of the dams—Sea’s Branch, Jersey Valley, and Hidden Valley—have secured the necessary funding in order to make the required repairs. However, two remaining dams—Runge Hollow and Yttri/Primmer—are short on the necessary funding to begin the structural repairs.
Kapanke thanked Representative Jennifer Shilling for recognizing his work on the motion and for publicly applauding his efforts during her testimony at the Joint Finance Committee hearing.

Arttus was transported to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse by Med-Link Air. New Wave Of Drugs Doing HarmKids are getting high and are getting away with it. And that's a huge problem in Winona. Officer Kevin Kearney spoke to a crowd of 175 Tuesday night...all wanting more information on Plant Food and Bath Salts. The effects of the Mephedrone fueled drug that goes by the names cloud nine....blue silk and ocean snow.....shocked some in attendance. Kearney says the problem with the legal drugs is so bad, that they receive 3-4 calls a day....anyone from concerned citizens to users themselves that call to say they are freaked out and are high at that time. Kearney says the problem is bad in Winona now and is now spreading from Lacrosse to Rochester and even Fillmore County is receiving reports of legal bath salt drug users there.
And as long as the legal drugs are out there Kearney says you will hear more stories about people being chased by werewolves and monsters and even some wanting to hurt themselves.....and really not even knowing what they are doing. More forums will possibly be scheduled in the future. Voter Id Leaves Questions Now
So what's in the Voter ID Bill and when does it take effect? Questions city and county clerks statewide are asking themselves today after the senate passed the bill yesterday on a 19-5 vote. Lacrosse City Clerk Teri Lehrke said she doesn’t disagree with a voter identification bill, but she doesn’t agree with it completely either. She says the prevention of potential voter fraud is a good thing, but the changes will be difficult for clerks, election officials and voters. She expects portions of the bill will go into effect for the July 12th recall elections. Lehrke says the whole problem with this is educating the voter. She's waiting for some guidance from the Government Accountability Board. Governor Scott Walker is set to sign the bill next Wednesday. More Daily Bike Commuters Could Come With Additional FacilitiesAlthough this Bike to Work Week was a feel-good opportunity to bring a few more bike commuters to the streets, huge numbers of bikers won't take to the pedals until they feel safe doing it, says Tim Keneipp from the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition. He says that safer feeling comes with bike lanes or dedicated cycle tracks or bike paths. Keneipp says, although special bike facilities can cost a little more extra to add, more people on bikes saves considerably on overall street wear. And saves much more, he says, on parking shortages in a city. |
