For much of this year, a long-time funding arrangement for the Holmen Fire District has been argued about, among the three communities sharing costs for fire service.
As a new year starts, the same three-way funding divide is in place, although there are still efforts aimed at getting Holmen to pay more and the town of Onalaska to pay less. Meanwhile, village president Nancy Proctor in Holmen says a new pumper will be added soon. Before the pumper is ready, though, the village and the town of Onalaska may try to reach a final settlement of a funding formula for the three communities in the fire district.
The 100-thousand dollar question is, how can hunger be eliminated in La Crosse?
The Franke Foundation will present a grant of 100-thousand dollars to the best idea for making wholesome food affordable in the community. The project is partly designed to get many groups in the area to work together on solving a major problem. And foundation director Mel Hoffman thinks chronic hunger can be solved in the La Crosse area.
One project chosen from all the ideas submitted to the Franke Foundation will be announced in March of 2014. Hoffman says other similar awards may be offered in the future, to inspire ways of addressing other community problems.
