Great news for Wisconsin property taxpayers. Or is it? Governor Walker's office says property taxes dropped this year for the first time in 12 years. But that's property taxes on a median-priced home. Probably sounds better than it is, says Todd Berry from Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance
Berry believes, when the final numbers are tallied, the total property taxes paid in Wisconsin this year will still be slightly higher than the year before.
Couples get into fights for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes those fights lead to arrests. Happens everyday in La Crosse. But on Friday, one couple got into it over a rat. The man and woman have been split up for awhile. And they share custody of their pet...rat. So the woman went to pick up the rat from her former boyfriend on Friday. But on the way, got into a texting war with the guy. When she got there, cops say he pushed her down and choked her. She's okay. But he got arrested and faces charges for the rat custody brawl.
When a drunk guy busted out a window in a bar in downtown La Crosse this week-end at about three in the morning, he probably didn't expect the bar's owner to chase him down. But, cops say, that's exactly how they managed to arrest Justin Halvorsen. The owner of the bar on the corner of fourth and Jay and an employee chased Halvorsen for several blocks after they saw him break one of the bar's windows after closing time. They finally got ahold of him after he jumped out of the bushes trying to tackle the employee. The two sat on the 23 year-old from Caledonia until cops there.
A convicted robber will wait two more months to be sentenced for a holdup that happened two years ago...
Samuel Wing has requested a second pre-trial investigation, before he is sentenced for a May 2010 armed robbery at a Burger King in Onalaska. Judge Elliott Levine granted the request, and rescheduled the sentencing hearing for June 12th. Wing is seeking a more favorable review than the original pre-sentence report recommending a long prison term. Wing and another man forced their way into the restaurant before it opened for the day, and he fired a shot during the robbery.
A night of drinking and doing drugs has led to a rape charge against a Viterbo student. Police have arrested Dennis Campos for raping another guy after the two got drunk and high together. Cops say the 21 year-old Campos met the victim in a bar downtown and bought him drinks. They went back to Campos' apartment, apparently smoked some pot, took some pills, after which the victim passed out. Police say Campos then carried the victim to his bed and raped the unconscious 22 year-old. Cops say Campos has admitted the assault took place. Bond for Campos has been set at $5000 cash.
