Not much has been done on the former site of La Crosse's Naval Reserve Center, since the center was demolished a few years ago.
The city has tried to encourage private home construction on the land, but that hasn't happened. And former city council member Tom Sweeney wants to be sure part of the lot will still be reserved for a veterans' memorial, on a 30-foot-wide walkway along Green Bay Street. The memorial to the people who worked at the Naval Center will be placed along that walkway. A neighborhood meeting is planned October 24th at Central High School, to gather ideas on how the vacant lot should be developed, and Sweeney wants to be sure the future memorial is compatible with what else goes on the land.
The Obama campaign is becoming familiar with the U-W-La Crosse campus...
Vice President Joe Biden will speak at the Cartwright Center on campus tomorrow. And today, an Obama bus pulled up near the football stadium, bringing a rock musician to meet with students. Chris Walla plays guitar with the band 'Death Cab for Cutie,' and he told La Crosse students that college might not be very affordable if Mitt Romney becomes president. Walla says he's traveling to Wisconsin campuses with the Obama bus because he wants more young people to be able to afford college.
