Number Of Ron Kind Challengers Rises To 4

Written by

Two new challengers to Congressman Ron Kind are introducing themselves in western Wisconsin...

Chippewa Falls attorney Karen Mueller, originally from La Crosse, is launching a Republican campaign to defeat Democrat Kind. Just last week, farmer Tony Kurtz of Prairie du Chien launched his campaign in the 3rd District. Kurtz and Mueller would join Chris Anderson and Ken Van Doren in the Republican primary this summer. A GOP primary has not been needed in most 3rd District elections since Kind took office in 1996, because usually, just one Republican has decided to run against the Democrat.

PDC Furniture Store Destroyed By Fire

Written by

Houses within two or three blocks of a shopping center in Prairie du Chien were evacuated last night, because of embers blowing from the site of the Slumberland fire.

The furniture store at Blackhawk Crossing in Prairie was destroyed in the fire Sunday night, and smoke damage was reported at most other nearby businesses in the strip mall. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire hasn't been announced yet. The store was built as a large supermarket in the early 1960's. Slumberland moved in a few years ago.

Monroe County Courthouse Bids Come In High

Written by
All that's left for the new justice center in Monroe County to see a ground breaking is a huge vote. Judge David Rice says he will be there for that vote on April 23rd. Rice says bids were opened on Thursday for the new courthouse and jail, revealing that all 4 came in over the projected $25 million the county wanted to spend on the downtown Sparta facility. The bid went to Miron Construction at a price tag of over $26 million. If approved by the full county board, a ground breaking could take place in May.

When La Crosse police chief Ron Tischer criticized local judges this year for letting drug suspects out of jail, he specifically singled out the case of Shawn Welch.

In January, Welch was busted in La Crosse for selling cocaine, bailed out of jail the same day, and was arrested three days later after another cocaine sale. After investigators learned that Welch planned to skip town if he was released again, his bond was set at 50-thousand dollars. Today, Welch reached negotiated pleas on the drug charges. He's still in the county jail, and his sentencing is set for June 3rd.
