Xcel May Lift Gas Conservation Request Today

Written by

Xcel Energy is hoping to lift its conservation request for natural gas customers today. The utility says the flow of gas is increasing, and the pipeline system was stable overnight. Xcel and some other energy companies have asked upper Midwestern customers to set their thermostats at 60 degrees to save natural gas because of current shortages.

Schools Close Already In Minnesota

Written by

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Snow forecast for this weekend and extreme cold expected early next week have led Rochester, Austin and Winona public schools to cancel classes for Monday, and other Minnesota school districts are thinking about it.

A storm system is expected to hit Saturday night and continue Sunday, with high winds packing the possibility of blizzard or white-out conditions in parts of southern Minnesota.

Behind the snow will come some of Minnesota's coldest air of the winter with lows of 20 to 25 degrees below zero and wind chills in the minus-35 to minus-50 range, comparable to the polar vortex that gripped Minnesota Jan. 6-7.

Several Twin Cities area school districts, including St. Paul, Edina and Mounds View, have said they plan to decide by Sunday evening whether to close on Monday.

Many large cities in America have organized one-day exhibitions that offer services to the homeless...

One such event is scheduled next Wednesday at a La Crosse church. Our Savior's Lutheran on Division Street will host 'Project Homeless Connect.' Dawn Kimpel from the La Crosse Homeless Coalition says people attending the event will have a free meal, and could get financial and legal advice. Future exhibitions in La Crosse are being planned for summertime.  Hours of the 'Homeless Connect' event are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Festival Foods, Family Vision Center, and Valley Dental are among the sponsors donating to the event.
