It's the old problem of 'pay me now, or pay me later'...

Two old elementary schools in La Crosse may need expensive repairs, or they could be replaced with a new building through a 16-million dollar referendum this fall. Joe Ledvina is in charge of buildings and grounds for the school district. Today, he showed reporters around the two schools...for example, pointing out the original boiler at Franklin that was installed almost 60 years ago.  Ledvina says the Franklin basement also has cracks in the ceiling, and a wall that's bending inward.  Roosevelt School dates back to the 1920's, but it would be preserved if the bond issue passes.  The referendum would add 100 dollars a year in taxes for the owners of a 400-thousand dollar house.

La Crosse County hasn't had to worry about local residents catching the West Nile virus this year...until now.

But the county health department confirms that a Holmen man is hospitalized with serious complications from the virus spread by mosquitoes. And vector control agent Dave Geske says up to five people in the county may have been infected. As of last week, the state health department said the virus had been found just in one bird in La Crosse County. Geske says bacteria will have to be used around storm sewers to kill those mosquitoes.

He tells us that West Nile had not spread from birds to humans in the county, before this first mosquito-related case was found.

Drunk Driver Convicted In July Cycle Crash

Written by

A drunk driving suspect is not pleading guilty...because he says he can't remember the accident he caused.

But David Carlson of La Crosse pleads 'no contest' to crashing his motorcycle, while drunk, in the town of Farmington. Carlson and a teenage passenger were hurt in the July accident. He's been arrested on O-W-I charges about a dozen times in the past. Judge Todd Bjerke says there's enough evidence to find Carlson guilty.

Carlson's blood alcohol just after the cycle crash was measured at .17.
